May is National Older Americans Month
by Barbara Mascio
The National Older Americans Month was founded by a Presidential Proclamation back in 1963. In fact, from 1963 to 1973 it was actually called, The National Senior Citizens Month.
I suspect, one day, the name will undergo
another change. Current seniors, our
older adults, do not like identifying with the words, Senior, Older Adult, Elderly,
Aging and so forth. We are a few short
years away from the Baby-Boomer generation
becoming the next generation of seniors.
No one in my age group wants to be identified as a senior, let alone, older adult or elderly.
I digress, however, you may want to begin
thinking about this. What would you like
to be called?
Each year, the Administration on Aging
selects a theme. See the calendar
of events to read more about the history
and themes.
I think it's great that one month of the year has been designated to honor our more experienced adults. I compare this to what I like to refer as, Hallmark Holidays, such as; Mother's Day, Father's Day, Sweetheart Day or Grandparents' Day.
Quality Care Options and Seniors Approve has
created a method to honor our seasoned
loved ones all year long. Family members and
our mature folks are creating a free focus
page at the Seniors Approve Web Community.
We've made this process very simple, a person simply answers a few questions listed on a form located at Free Web Pages for Seniors
Within a short time, a personalized web page is created! Meet our first group by visiting their pages, you may just walk away a little wiser.

We are proud to honor our seniors each
and every day and welcome you to
encourage your loved ones to share his
or her words of wisdom with all of our
visitors. As mentioned before, you may
create a page on his or her behalf.
What do you think older adults should
be called? What name do you want to
be identified with? Post your ideas
and thoughts about the subject on the

DigPics-A Celebration
of Life
Families are very different these days. It's not like it used to be... When I was growing up, our family lived in the same rural area. Our grandma and great-grandma lived with us as well. We grew up learning about our heritage and family history quite naturally. I am one of ten children, and only three of us live in Ohio now. The rest are scattered, as most families are these days.
I personally love the new methods of recording family history. This month's sponsor is a company called DigPics. You can read about them at DigiPics
DigPics describes their services:
Send us your most treasured photos, slides or paper
memorabilia,(love letters, marriage license, kids
doodles, ect) choose some music for the background
(from your collection) and using special
effect transitions and titles, we'll turn them into
a special video memorial of your loved one. We
digitally scan your material and craft custom DVD
labels and covers.
Another excellent choice in recording your history
is local to Cleveland. Although similar, My Story
Productions is a bit different. You can read about
their services by going to
My Story
Productions will actually record a live interview
with you and/or your loved ones.
An alternative to video, is an actual autobiography.
Families can no longer assume that our family treasures,
the things that matter the most, the little nuances that make
us who we are, will be passed down through conversation any more.
We are just so busy and so scattered. This author,
Noreen Shanahan has developed an easy to use guide
in writing your autobiography or assisting a loved
in writing their biography. You can read about her

'5 Ways to Determine Your Aging Loved Ones' Living Status-Taking Notice During Family Holiday
Gatherings Can Prevent A Crisis Later On
By Gina Saxton, RN - Co-Owner of Comfort Keepers
(West Cleveland Location) A QCO Certified Service Phone: 440-734-1111
We live in a very mobile society where families
don't always live in the same town or even state
for that matter. Unlike the "old days", entire
families throughout America don't have the
opportunity to come together every week for a
Saturday BBQ or Sunday dinner. Which is why the
upcoming holiday season along with summer vacation
time is such a busy travel time - families still
cherish togetherness and the holiday season is
often the only time of the year they can do so.
It is not uncommon for the adult children of
seniors to have some concerns about how their
parents are doing. This year while you're enjoying
the companionship of your family and catching up on
lost time, make good use of your visit to review
your aging parents' and loved ones' living status.
Many holiday traditions tempt your five senses.
These five senses can also be used to evaluate the
status of elderly family members. Families often
overlook a variety of warning signs such as
forgetfulness, lack of house cleaning or a decrease
in physical appearance by writing them off to "old
age".

'What it Means to be the Executor of an Estate'
by Martha Taylor Owner of DocuPrep A QCO Certified
Business Phone: 610-259-5400
DocuPrep
At one time or another, we will all experience the
loss of someone we love. Dealing with that death
is difficult because we are not only dealing with
our own emotions, but with those of family and
friends whose sorrow may be even more painful than
our own. You may also have the responsibility to
act as executor for the decedent's estate if you
are a spouse, a son or daughter.
While it may be practical to say that everyone
needs to make a will, put their 'final
arrangements' in writing and leave instructions for
the heirs, I'm sure it wouldn't surprise us to
learn that many people do not take this sensible
approach. Consequently, after they die, their
family members and friends proceed in a state of
semi-confusion trying to wrap up the decedent's
affairs.
If you are an executor and find yourself in a
similar situation, take heart. There are now more
options available to you than running off to the
lawyer's office. You have the option to hire a
lawyer to act as a coach and have him answer your
legal questions, do some research and review legal
paperwork before submitting them to the court or
mailing them.
Other options include hiring a document preparation
service, like DocuPrepUSA, to prepare the probate
paperwork and the myriad of correspondence needed
to wrap up the decedent's affairs.

'QCO Announces the Work/Life
Benefit Service'
by Angel Kearney
Quality Care Options announces a revolutionary
employee benefit that enables employers to be more
competitive while saving expenses associated with
caring for an employee's elderly parent. Quality
Care Options (QCO) is the first and only organization to offer
access to elder care services that have a 90% or higher customer
satisfaction rating, derived from the industrys' first
independent customer-driven survey process.
A recent study from AT&T showed that 28 percent of
their workforce provides and coordinates elder care
to their aging parents. The annual costs associated
with this phenomenon, is estimated to be $1142 per employee
due to absenteeism, workday interruptions, eldercare crises and
additional supervisor costs.
AT&T found that every elder care crisis caused an initial absenteeism of four to seven days with additional absenteeism throughout the crisis. Barbara Mascio, Founder and President of QCO says, "We find that clients typically miss less than one day due to the services we supply. They are less distracted at work and are comforted knowing that we take the time to listen, and have the expertise to connect these families to the most appropriate services, based on the individual's needs, desires, geographical area and of course, budget. Our QCO Employee Benefit Solution offers relief to both the employee and employer for less than one percent of the cost that AT&T has estimated."

Michelle, an activity director of an Adult Day Service located in Michigan wrote, "Our center recently began computer training for our seniors. We found your site and we were wondering if the staff could actually help our seniors to write their free page. This would mean that we would be submitting on their behalf. Is it okay to do it that way?"
Yes, Michelle. The form provided is a guideline to assist the senior in forming the script for the web page. It does ask that you are a senior. But we're happy to accept submissions on behalf of the senior. We feel this will become a very interesting section, again, a way to honor our elders by offering a forum in which he or she can share something about their lives. We look at our seniors as walking history books, with so much to offer our communities. There are fewer opportunities these days for a senior to share of themselves. Every life has left an imprint and a ripple throughout the world. It ought to find a place of honor. We hope these Senior Pages make that available.
Radio Reading Services (RRS)
Seniors and those with certain disabilities often do not have easy access to standard print. The Radio Reading Services provide topical and local information to this population. RRS broadcasts readings of daily newspapers, timely and topical printed information and topics of special interest over a secondary FM or Television signal. RRS can be accessed with a special receiver, stereo television, computer or telephone. Some RRSs offer personal reading assistance by matching a volunteer reader with a print-handicapped person with a special need.
RRS is offered to those who need it at not cost, though donations are welcomed. For more information, contact the RRS at 614-644-1714 or online atRRS for Ohio offices to get started. If outside of Ohio see National RRS From this site, you will find locations throughout the United States and Canada.

'The Daughters of Elder Care'
First published in 'The Cleveland Women's Journal'
March 2004
By Barbara Mascio
We have all heard the old African saying "It takes a
whole village to raise a child." It expresses some things
that we can all easily accept: family values, shared
responsibility, community spirit. But where is that
same spirit when it comes to caring for our elderly?
Typically, all the responsibility falls on one adult child,
normally the daughter. The adult daughter cares for children, spouse and an older adult relative while maintaining a career.
What about caring for the needs of the caregiver? Her
needs are often ignored and trivialized by community,
physicians, employers, other family and society in general.
Family caregivers faced with a landscape much different
from the one commonly accepted and assumed by society
suffer guilt and exhaustion while attempting to 'do it all'.
"Families have never done this with such complicated
medical treatment and the kind of economic pressures this
brings today," says Carol Leving, director of the United Hospital Fund's Families and Health Care project in New York City. "In the old days, people got better or they died."

A Caregiver is anyone who provides unpaid care and
support, to adult family members or friends who are frail
elderly, chronically ill, or have a disability.
According to the National Long term Care Survey,
over 7 million people are informal caregivers, i.e. spouses,
adult children, and the relatives and friends.
Caregiving can be both a difficult as well as rewarding
experience and sometimes we are so deeply concerned
about the well being of the person we are caring for, that
we forget our own needs.
The Fairhill Center offers support groups, one day events
and a formal 6 week caregiving course.

From our Readers:
'This is a service and organization who's time has arrived. I wish QCO had been around ten years ago when I first became a caregiver of my elderly/sick parents...'
R.V, PHD, Florida
'Thank you very much for helping me to create my very
own web page. My kids can't believe it. I have trouble
writing with pen and pencil and so turned to my typewriter.
After much urging from my children, I began to use the
computer they purchased for me two years ago. I learned
how to email first and found out that my kids (and grand-
children) actually write back to an email message. Not
so with pen and paper...'

'I have been checking out the changes to the prescription benefits programs. They don't seem to be what was advertised. I see no real savings and the opportunity actually of spending more. Can anyone shed some light here? Thanks'

Elder Mediation: New Role in Healthcare
By Patricia Ruflin, RN, C.O.O. Parma General Hospital and
Patti Bertschler, MA, LPCC of Northcoast Conflict Solutions
"As C.O.O. of Parma Community General Hospital, I (co-author, Pat Ruflin, RN) see so much more conflict now than ever before. The fast-pace society, the high expectation that healthcare will keep people alive and well much longer, and the fact that most Americans wait until they are in crisis to begin to resolve it, all contribute to this increase."
On the in-patient side, these situations are all too familiar:
- Family members becoming hostile to the point of having staff or security intervene due to loud disagreements among siblings regarding their aging mother's care.
- Adult children burned out by their parent's long history of depression and total dependence on the family. Now Dad is suicidal, and the family wants nothing more to do with him.
- Family disputes about end-of-life decisions despite the presence of a valid Living Will.
In all these examples, Elder Mediation offers the best possible outcome for the senior, the family, and the hospital staff. When arguments reach the point beyond which the case manager or patient liaison do not have time or training, mediators can step in.

Jan A. from Pittsburgh PA writes:
"Mom's long term memory is still very much intact, however we have been warned she will slowly begin to lose this, much in the same way she's lost her short term memory. We(as a family)have begun a project using a simple format to help capture mom's life in a book. It's enhanced our visits with her and has drawn all of closer together."
